Light polarizing systems are used in a variety of high-end applications,
including consumer projectors and display products for the medical,
scientific, and defense industries.
As natural light passes through a polarizer,
the light is separated into two waves with perpendicular polarization states. When
the polarized light passes through a second polarizer,
the wave can be attenuated or even blocked completely from passing, depending
on the orientation of the second polarizer with respect to the first polarizer.
For nearly a century, thin film and organic dye polarizers have been the only
polarizers available for engineers and scientists to use for visible light
applications. Thin film polarizers are limited because of the interference
effect
so they are application specific.
Unfortunately,
organic polarizers have some limitations.
For example,
under heat or UV exposure, they deteriorate rather quickly.
Here we have a standard three channel video projector
with traditional organic polarizers.
As heat from the light is absorbed by the polarizers, they degrade after a
short time.
With advancements in technology,
new polarizing products have been developed.
The original wire-grid polarizer was the next generation of polarizer, offering
improved performance that overcomes the limitation of organic polarizers.
Transmission efficiencies can be as high as 95%.
ProFlux polarizers by Moxtek are completely inorganic
and are able to function at over 300 degrees Celsius for more than
five thousand hours with no degradation.
The high heat tolerance of Moxtek polarizers allows the use of brighter
projector light sources, resulting in brighter, more colorful images at
longer distances.
In addition,
the wire grid polarizers have higher transmission and better contrast over
broader angles of incidence,
plus or minus 20 degrees, with little change in performance,
creating a higher contrast, more uniform on-screen image. Skew rays are well
polarized, and little effort is needed to precisely align the polarizer,
making Moxtek polarizers the right choice for any projector application.
Since 1999, Moxtek has been awarded many United States
patents on broadband wire grid polarizers for the visible spectrum, as well as
ultraviolet and infrared.
This polarizer is manufactured on glass and other substrates, and employs aluminum
wires. Moxtek commercialized the modern wire-grid polarizer technology
for use in consumer projector and display products. Markets have expanded
to include applications for Head Mounted Display, Infrared based night vision,
pixelation based 3D cameras and projectors,
Hyperspectral Imaging,
Imaging in Medical, and others.
