[intro music - Using DEF - GMC Sierra HD] >>Diesel exhaust fluid,
or DEF, is used with diesel engines
to reduce the amount of emissions produced. The fluid level in the DEF tank
must be maintained for the vehicle to run correctly.
The DEF tank holds 5.3 gallons of fluid. Since we expect DEF usage
to be about 1 to 1.25 percent of diesel fuel usage,
you can expect to use about a tank of DEF for every 5,000 miles, or 8,000 kilometers
of driving. Your mileage may vary
depending on the type of driving you do. The DEF fill is located under the hood,
on the passenger side at the back of the engine compartment.
Look for the blue cap. When adding DEF to an empty
or very low tank always add at least one gallon
to release the vehicle from any speed limitations.
Do not over fill the DEF tank. Stop when the fluid reaches
to the top of the fill pipe. If you spill DEF on the vehicle
while filling the tank, wipe the surface with a damp cloth.
Clean up small spills on the ground by absorbing with dry earth
sand, or other non-combustible material and scoop into a container for disposal.
While DEF is not listed as a hazardous waste
by the federal government and small amounts may even be used
as fertilizer, please use proper disposal methods.
Should the DEF tank start to run low while you're driving the vehicle
the on-board electronic warning system will alert you
and as the fluid level drops warnings will be displayed
in the driver information center, or DIC. These messages will begin at approximately
1,000 miles, or 1,600 kilometers of range remaining.
This message will appear again at approximately 300 miles, or 500 kilometers
of range remaining. The driver must acknowledge this warning.
Below 300 miles of range remaining these messages will appear
every time the vehicle is started and display the specific distance
to empty. At about the 75 mile range
or 120 kilometers the DIC will display the message
exhaust fluid low speed limited soon.
If these warnings are ignored and the DEF tank becomes empty
the system chimes 4 times and the DIC will display 2 messages
which alternate every 5 seconds. Exhaust fluid empty refill now
and 55 mph max speed upon restart. The DEF indicator light
will remain on. The vehicle speed will be limited
to 55 miles per hour or 89 kilometers per hour
at the next key start. If the vehicle continues to be driven
without filling the DEF tank it will display alternating messages
after the next key start. The DEF indicator light
will now flash and the warning chimes will
sound every 3 minutes up to 3 times per key cycle.
Then, after the first fuel fill with the DEF tank still empty
a third warning will be added to the alternating DIC messages.
4 miles per hour max speed next fuel fill.
Finally, after the second fuel fill and you still have not filled the DEF tank
the vehicle will be limited to 4 miles per hour
or 7 kilometers per hour The DIC alternates these messages:
exhaust fluid empty, refill now and speed limited to 4 miles per hour.
