The topic of this Workshop is Sonification,
defined as the translation of datasets into music and sound.
Sonification is a subset of the Auditory Display,
which generally refers to representation of information
by means of noise and sound.
As it happens for all new subjects,
the first attempts were characterized by a scientific approach.
However, scientific research can contaminate the artistic projects:
Biotechnology is an effective example.
Currently, this contamination is ambivalent.
A possible sonification approach is to focus on a flowing parameter
and assign it to a specific feature of sound.
For instance, data collected over time
are characterized by the time variable,
which is one of the main features of music:
this type of parameterization is useful
in the detection of patterns existing in data series,
which could be hardly detectable by visualization,
resulting in noise for the eyes.
To go into more depth of Sonification processes,
it became crucial to define the dichotomy between listening and hearing.
The listening process brings aesthetic and artistic design into sonification,
however, the perfect sonification exercise
should unambiguously represent data,
telling the story as it is.
Nevertheless, data representation should be musically pleasant
but emotionally neutral,
since the introduction of emotions into sonification
implies a pre-interpretation of the data.
