Teaching Panel 2011 UVU "Hi, my name is Katelyn Andresa,
I'm from Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
We at Utah Valley University,
we have a few programs for education.
We have an early care and education one-year certificate,
an early childhood education associate degree
which would cover daycare/preschool,
and then an elementary education bachelor's degree
which covers k-6 grade, and then we also have secondary education
which is 7-12 grade, and then a master's degree now
in education as well.
Some of our deadlines to apply for our programs are March 1
if you're beginning in fall, which is August time frame,
and also October 1 if you're beginning in January,
so we do accept students both fall and spring.
Some helpful information for transfer students,
similar to what a lot of others have said, if you transfer
with an associate's degree from SLCC,
it mostly covers your general education requirements,
and then we do have some pre-professional requirements
to get into our programs, which you'll need to be aware of,
so I would suggest meeting with me or another advisor
at Utah Valley University
if you're interested in coming down there.
Some things that make our program unique, along with,
I guess maybe it's not so unique anymore, we have our cohorts
where each semester you're put into-
well each semester you'll have a lot experience
in the elementary schools.
So for three weeks of the semester, class is cancelled
and you go out into the schools, and you do some teaching
and you observe in the classrooms, and that's right
from the beginning of the elementary education program.
So, you're in schools each semester,
and then your final semester is student teaching,
and that's 13 weeks where you're basically a full-time teacher
in the classroom.
We also have partnerships with many of the school districts
in the state, well 5, we've got Wasatch, Nebo, Alpine, Granite,
and Jordan, and so you'll be able to decide
which school district you want to work in.
And then we also have an internship option also,
where about half of our students (I think this year we had
about 60%) that applied got internships where that's-
you're paid half salary for about a year of teaching
and it replaces student teaching.
So if you have any specific questions
for Utah Valley University, I'm just back at that table,
we do have some requirements to get into our program,
including the praxis, and GPA requirements,
and some other class requirements, so just be sure
to come see us and I can give you all that information.
Thank you."
