With growing season just around the corner, now it is time to give your planter a good
look from a preparation, maintenance and calibration standpoint. In this podcast, we will make
review of the pre-planting checklist.
Remember, planters need to be checked from the safety chain to row drive unity. Check
the drive trains; make sure they aren’t rusted or stiff. Next, check the shaft bearings
and sprocket bearings for shape and condition. They should also be well lubricated.
Clean and inspect the chemical meters used for seed treatments on the planter. Take a
look at the opener blades and make sure they aren’t worn and inspect the sprocket’s
teeth for wear. If you have a vacuum meter system, make sure it is clean and seals aren’t
worn to ensure proper metering.
When in doubt, consult your owner’s manual and be sure to follow the hourly service and
greasing requirements to keep your equipment running. It is also not a bad idea to stop
by the dealers or to visit the equipment manufacturer’s website to learn what’s new in the market.
