The world has gathered to pay homage to Nelson Mandela in mass memorial service in Johannesburg.
Tens of thousands of people, including some of the world's most powerful figures, were
present for the ceremony. Shin Se-min reports.
"We join together in sorrow for a mighty loss and the celebration of a mighty life. What
a wonderful display of this 'Rainbow Nation.'"
Some 95-thousand mourners,... including dozens of presidents and prime ministers and celebrities
descended upon Johannesburg Tuesday to say goodbye to late South African President Nelson
Mandela. The public memorial service was held at First
National Bank Stadium, where Mandela gave his first speech after being released from
prison. Despite being a memorial service, and despite
the rainy conditions, the mood at the stadium was both joyous and festive.
Thousands of people came together,... mirroring the global message of reconciliation.
Several leaders and Mandela's relatives gave speeches praising Mandela's achievements and
his life.
"It is hard to eulogise any man,... how much harder to do so for a giant of history, who
moved a nation towards justice."
Following Tuesday's memorial, Mandela's body will lie in state at the Union Buildings in
Pretoria for three days so citizens can pay their respects.
He will then be buried on Sunday in his ancestral village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape.
