Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute. The arrival of spring also heralds
the arrival of highway construction season. Motorists will soon be seeing work crews throughout
the Commonwealth, so the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reminds drivers to use caution in
work zones. National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week is April 4 through 8. The message is:
“Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone.” In 2009 there were 667 highway deaths in work
zones nationwide. Most of those were drivers and their passengers. So here are 10 tips
for safer driving in work zones: Expect the unexpected. Slow Down. Don’t Tailgate. Keep
a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.
Pay attention to the signs. Obey road crew flaggers. Stay alert and minimize distractions.
Keep up with the traffic flow. Schedule enough time to drive safely, and check ahead for
traffic information by calling 511 or visiting the online site at 511.ky.gov. Finally, be
patient and stay calm. This has been your KYTC minute. Visit transportation.ky.gov every
Thursday for updated information.
