Host: Hello. Welcome to Zone Rouge.
Host: The music you just heard is from the band Boize.
Host: Here is the band, formed of Stephane Fania, Robert Kourie and Perry Blairy. (nice going, the name is actually Perry Blainey).
Blainey: Hi mom.
Host: You guys composed the music we just heard. To start, I'd like to discuss how the band got started.
Fania: Well it started about six months ago, with our current line-up, when our vocalist Perry Blainey joined.
Fania: Prior to that, Robert and I had been looking for a vocalist for a good six or seven months, to continue what we had started six years ago.
Fania: Which was to write our original material and land a record label deal.
Host: So you're saying this current line-up has been around for about six months. Good.
Host: I'd like to show you the cover for this demo. It's really amazing. You can see that it's spelled B-O-I-Z-E, as opposed to B-O-Y-S. Who came up with this?
Kourie: It was Perry's idea. We were looking for a band name and out of nowhere Perry came up with it and we loved it, so we've been using it ever since.
Host: And you self-produced your own demo? How did all this come around? Recording, planning, producing?
Kourie: It started when we were tired of playing in the basement. So we got together some money and we went in studio to record those five songs.
Kourie: I think it came out really well, very professional.
Host: I do think it does look professional. The artwork and cover are really well made.
Host: We can see the five songs on the tape: "I Need You", "Out of Your Mind", "Out 2 Deep", "Can't You See" and finally The Bug".
Host: And the music is composed by Stephane Fania and Robert Kourie with the lyrics by Perry Blainey.
Host: As far as the band goes, what are the upcoming plans? Do you have any shows coming up?
Kourie: We have a show coming up this December [1989] and another in April [1990].
Kourie: However we are currently concentrating on writing more songs. Ideally we'd like to have enough songs to play for an hour and a half to two hours.
Kourie: Not that we aren't looking to play shows right now, just that our priority goes with making those potential shows as best as possible.
Host: Alright. To gather some material.
Fania: Indeed. As he said, to be able to play for an hour and a half we need a good fifteen to sixteen original songs.
Host: Already these five songs were written entirely by you. How did you come to write these songs? Do you start out with a beat or lyrics first?
Kourie: Usually we start out with the music, either Stephane or I have an idea and we work on that idea.
Kourie: And once the song's structure is there, Perry comes in action with lyrics. Finally we polish it up until we're satisfied.
Host: And in the band, what do each of you do? I know that Perry is the vocalist.
Blainey: I take care of the microphone. That's what I like doing. I also write the lyrics.
Host: Alright so lyricist and vocalist. And you?
Kourie: I'm the guitarist and music composer.
Host: And Stephane?
Fania: I play bass and compose with Robert.
Host: Alright so what are your musical influences? Are they from a certain genre or certain period?
Blainey: Well I grew up in the '60s and when I started to really listen to music it was the '70s.
Blainey: The lady who was hosting before you had a very nice Led Zeppelin t-shirt and that's pretty much in my line of music.
Blainey: The Rolling Stones, "Les Roches Roulantes" in French.
Blainey: "Profondément Mauve", Deep Purple as well. That's pretty much my style.
Host: And you Robert?
Kourie: For me it's the '70s as well. More metal though, like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Those are my biggest influences.
Fania: Don't forget Ozzy.
Kourie: Ozzy certainly. Randy Rhoads.
Host: And you Stephane?
Fania: I'm a lot more varied than the others. It starts from classical to punk rock.
Kourie: Pet Shop Boys
Host: Classical?
Fania: I played classical for a long time, so it's one of my influences when I write.
Host: So you're influenced by a great deal of music. Alright.
Host: What other plans do you have for the future?
Kourie: In the future we would really like to go all the way with recording and album and doing a major tour.
Kourie: But currently we're mostly pilfering around what each label has to offer for us.
Host: I'd like to know how each of you came to make music. Was it because when you were young your mom made you play piano? Or did you fall in the drums?
Blainey: Well for me personally, even when I was young, listening to the radio, I really got into it. Everyone used to tell me that I should play in an orchestra.
Blainey: I eventually tried out when I was nineteen, haven't stopped since then so here I am! It's very exciting!
Kourie: As for me I started in elementary school with the recorder.
Host: Oh yes I remember that. In fifth and sixth grade when we had to learn.
Kourie: "D'où viens-tu, bergère?". And after that...
Host: There's a bit of a difference between that song and Ozzy.
Fania: I think he got a little bit fed up with "D'où viens-tu, bergère?".
Kourie: After that I started playing saxophone and then at twelve started playing guitar.
Fania: Well for me it's like you said, my mom made me play piano when I was a kid.
Kourie: It's apparent!
Host: Yes I guess that's where the classical comes from.
Fania: I play four years of classical piano. Then I played a load of other instruments which would be too long to list.
Fania: Later on I realized that I could compose as well as play so I started focusing on that.
Fania: So I found a writing partner and it's a lot easier this way to compose. I start with an idea and he completes it.
Host: So each brings his own element.
Fania: We help out each other in writing the general aspect of the song. And then when Perry comes in afterwards that's when we really finish it.
Host: And finally finish it.
Fania: As much as possible with the arrangements and production.
Host: So you have an upcoming show and your demo is out, everything is going well for the band.
Host: Another thing I wanted to mention. If you wish to obtain a copy of Boize's demo, please write to our sponsors.
Host: So that's all for tonight, thank you for being on the show and good luck with everything.
