Three and half years as the Secretary of Homeland Security, and one of the things I really have
grown to appreciate is that even though the title of our department is Homeland Security,
so much of our work is international in nature. It's how we interact in the international
aviation environment, how we process cargo and the global supply chain around the world,
how we deal with criminal matters that may span multiple countries at the same time.
And of course terrorist organizations respect no national boundaries and so we are always
working together on those and the best example of that are the most recent airplane plots,
one involved an explosive device that was going to be put on a plane, a more sophisticated
underwear bomb, and the other was a bomb put in toner cartridges again on cargo planes.
So, (in) both of those plots were revealed by working with international partners and
sharing intelligence.
