The conductor is going to get off and say "all aboard!"
For Sylvia and me, Trans-Health 2013 ended exactly where it began
On the train platform at Philadelphia's 30th Street Station
Although Trans-Health 2013 had been exciting and useful
we were both ready for the two-hour trip back to Washington, DC
Returning home would truly grant us the chance to integrate the lessons of Trans-Health into
our daily lives
(engine and breaks)
Take 1, 3, 2
Wake up Ms Sylvia or put down that crossword puzzle or whatever you're doing
We have a video to do for our wonderful Trusunlight subscribers
Where we wrap up another wonderful experience at Trans-Health
I'm not being biased, am I?
It was wonderful for me. It was wonderful. Me too
I'm glad we agree on that. We agree on a lot of things
Go down a list of a few of your highlights
Just a few, because we don't have all night. OK
I'm sorry if I seem testy, we're on a late night train from Philadelphia back to DC
There are no Acela trains
This is a more slow conventional train
It's driving me crazy
I'd much rather be on the Acela which is faster and more modern
If I can go on a little bit longer
Do you know these are the same rail cars that they used when I was a little girl
Oh wow
And they're still around
As old as I am!
OK, Let's go back to the convention
Highlights for you Ms Sylvia
Well first of all the guide was 150 some pages
It was a huge conference, huge!
It certainly was
About 3,000 people
They fit in nicely. It didn't feel crowded
There was only one session I noticed was full
The rest had plenty of room for people
And I think in this case bigger is better
Yes, a lot more opportunities. Different types of discussion groups. Plenty of things to
choose from.
What were your favorite workshops? Then I'm going to go down my list.
Can you hold yhis for a second? Can you hold it?
Sure, I can hold it.
My favorite one. I guess in terms of taking hormones and looking at the effects of taking
estradiol in pill form
And how that can be harmful to you
Naturopathic
That's why they suggested many naturopathic supplements you can take
to help with the hormones as well as take the creams or the shots more effective than
the pill
I guess you're saying in the old days when transgender women were going thru transition,
they would recommend they take a form of the birth control pill
And they're finding out now that's not a great idea due to lots of risks of things like blood
clots and so forth
And probably not as effective assome of the items on the market today
I'd like to know about this naturopathic concept. I think that's a cool idea
Well there's
I'm always learning
It's interesting because for the last 10 years I've been a naturopathic type of wellness
program
Some of the supplements I already take, fish oil for instance
It's taking things that help with your overall health
And the more effective and healthy you are e more the hormones are going to be working
for you
If you're not a healthy person, the hormones are not going to do the things you want them
to do
Important messages from Sylvia
Now seminars I went to. I took great notes.
Started off on Thursday with Partners of Transwomen. Very interesting topic.
Trans images in ***. That was led by a panel of former *** performers.
Very, very interesting perspectives there.
Changing your ID Documents That was led by some representatives from
NCTE
The National Center for Transgender Equality
Extremely helpful. I wish that had been on YouTube because I think people woyld find
it especially useful.
A wonderful, wonderful seminar I attended, Trans Pioneers of color
It was a panel of trans activists, people of color, who've done great things over the
years and decades
On that panel, oh, Charlene Arcila whom I absolutely love
They call her Mother Charlene
I love, love, love her. She's one of the founders of Trans-Health. Just a remarkable, beautiful
woman.
She kind of reminds me of Maya Angelou when I see her. Just a quiet spirit, just a terrific
person.
I had the honor of meeting and interviewing Mother Charlene at Trans-Health 2011
I was understandably very excited and couldn't resist giving her a huge hug!
Almost done with my list. Went to a seminar today called Feminizing Hormones
Little bit different than your seminar on naturopathic
Also very, very useful, gave the latest research and thinking on the best protocols for hormone
therapy
Your one on the naturopathic was actually called
Hormones and Chronic Illness
But the beginning of that seminar I did not find very useful
It was the naturopathic part I found much more helpful
Sorry, I accidentally turned off the camera
It's late folks
The main point is they didn't have lots of good research and did not report very well
Trans-health is a wonderful conference with wonderful workshops, but they are not all
perfect.
Some are very close to perfect though, including that one on trans pioneers of color.
Almost done with my list
New and exciting developments in gender confirmation surgery
Led by Dr. Kathy Rumer, a surgeon in the Philadelphia area
The latest trends in facial and body surgery, including gender reassignment surgey
Last but not least I went to a seminar on Trans-fostering.
That was for people who are transgender who hope to become a foster parent or open to
the idea ofbeing foster parents to transgender children
That was vey insightful and kind of symbolized something I find very remarkable at Trans-Health
And that's about the great number of non-trans people who attend it. I think that's a very
good thing, don't you?
Parents dealing with their transgender chilren
Some
of the ladies identified themselves as grandparent
What was interesting was the support and eagerness of the parents to find out how toraise the
children.
How they are desperate to talk to other parents to get kids through puberty, so they are sharing
notes
We can't forget that's how I met you, at a conference
That's right! You can make lifelong friendships at these conferences, extremely valuable life
information as well
Talk a little bit about Philadelpha. Great weather. We were worried we were going to
have some storms
We missed them. We were in the right plalce at the right time.
Just lots off un in the city this year. Philly really is a very fun city.
The only way you got wet isa somebody spilled their water.
I live in a more urban area, I'm technically in a suburb, it's a built-up suburb
But you live in a more traditionally suburban area.
But even you like beimg in Center City Philadelphia
Well I'm getting used to it, hanging around with you
Even when I wasn't there, you were out shopping, meeting people, enjoying city life, walking
around
That was fun until you left me "go this way."
turn left and I'm - walking and walking and walking
So I think that pretty much sums it up
Let me look at my notes one more time
I think so
That pretty much sums up our wonderful Trans-Health 2013 experience.
We really do thank you so much for watching
We hope you will consider subscribing because that gives us a nice shoutout and encouragement
to do future videos
Bye all, bye bye.
