>>Scott Strome (Entrepreneur of the Year): Every researcher wants to hit a homerun.
But there's a lot of people in the Hall of Fame
who just hit singles.
So I just want to get on base and hopefully allow
the next guy to bat me in.
>>Unidentified Woman: Just a long fly ball from
Camden Yards, University of Maryland-Baltimore's
BioPark is home to Scott Strome's team of researchers.
>> Gliknik is a biotechnology company.
And what we're trying to do is make therapeutics
for inflammation or the treatment of inflammation
and for the treatment of cancer.
And we're trying to replace a drug called
IVIG, which is intravenous immunoglobulin.
And that's a drug that's a human blood product.
It's pulled from multiple donors from between five
and 50,000 different people.
>> Dr. Strome became interested in finding an
alternative to IVIG when it was mentioned as a
potential treatment for his daughter Arianna's
inflammatory condition.
She recovered well without the drug, but other
patients still need an alternative.
>> The result of that work and effort was the
development of what we believe is going to be a
recombinant product for IVIG, which I think will
help a huge number of people.
>> As scientific founder of Gliknik, Dr. Strome is
the first to admit his expertise is science, not business.
And he's grateful to the University System of
Maryland and the state for getting Gliknik off the ground.
>> I was really excited about the potential to
start a company.
And the folks at Maryland were terrific.
The MIPPs, the Maryland Industrial Partnership
Program, the biotech tax credit, certain things
like that could have - we could never have started
Gliknik without.
It really, really facilitated things.
>> Dr. Strome believes academia and
entrepreneurship make a great pair.
Maryland thinks so, too.
Gliknik was named 2009 Maryland Incubator Company
of the year.
>> Most importantly, when you think about what the
mission of a university is, it's - one of its core
themes has to be the development of new
knowledge, particularly in a medical school, which
will have a positive impact on patient's lives.
>> Gliknik has raised $15 million in equity and $3
million in non-dilutive capital.
It has also sponsored $1.5 million in research at the
university.
In addition, working in the BioPark creates and
atmosphere of collaboration with other
entrepreneurial endeavors.
>>Ajay Jain (Surgical Oncologist): I'm doing research into antibodies
that might be able to induce immune responses against cancer.
And Gliknik is developing some of these types of antibodies.
So from a collaborative standpoint, you know, they
have helped supply and helped troubleshoot using
these types of antibodies.
>> Dr. Strome has won numerous awards as an
otolaryngologist but feels especially honored to earn
Entrepreneur of the Year.
>> For me personally, what's exciting about the
award is the award itself.
And what I mean by that is I believe it's a
recognition by the university that
scholarship can take many forms.
And scholarship can take the form of an
entrepreneur, and that's a valid way to look at the world.
I think the way I measure success is having the
chance - having the ability to help a lot of people.
I don't know whether I'm ever going to be able to do that.
All I know is that at the end of the day, I'll have tried my best.
