Did you know that South Korea produces a daily food waste of
170,000,000 liters of food waste?
And did you know that our school produces approximately 70L of that every day?
We are here to present to you about an environmental campaign
we are planning to hold this year.
First of all, to introduce ourselves,
we are the members of the Green Club,
a student led environmental group
in Cheongna Dalton International School.
Our presentation today will be about the purpose of our club,
the goals we aspire to accomplish throughout the year,
and the means in which we will use to achieve our expectations.
Now let us dive into the details:
According to recent data collected in 2011,
there are more than 36 million tons of food wastes
being thrown away annually.
About 96 percent of these wastes
have been thrown away in landfill sites or incinerators.
These piles of waste bring an overall negative effect
by polluting the environment.
Did you know that food waste is not only harmful financially
but actually affects the environment in many different sorts of ways?
Food waste impacts the climate, the water, the land, and the air!
For instance, when food waste begins to rot, it emits methane gas,
which is one of the most harmful greenhouse gases
that have a direct relationship to the earth's climate change.
Also, did you know that Asia is causing a serious problem related to food waste?
Not because of the sheer mass of Asia's food waste
but because rice, our dominant diet, gives off a very high methane emission.
There are many facts that we don't know about the environment we live in.
It is crucial for our society to realize the gravity of these environmental issues
and begin to figure out ways to resolve them.
This is why our club is thriving to reduce the amount of food waste at our school.
Although it may be a small start,
it is a beginning step for our club, our school, and the world.
Now we will present to you about the details of our club's plan.
The name of the campaign we will be holding is called "The Green Campaign."
The title of our campaign may seem too simple and straightforward,
but we believe that the campaign's title effectively reflects its primary objective:
to reduce food waste at our school.
The procedure for this campaign is quite simple.
The campaign is going to be held throughout the year
and the campaign's expectations can be distinguished between...
To begin with, for the short term aims,
the Green campaign will be initiated by the accumulation of the school's food waste for a month being measured.
Then, for each day, the amount of food waste will be calculated.
As you can see in this picture,
we will use this calendar to keep track of the amount of food waste our school produces daily.
Our expectation is that the students will able to produce
less amount of food waste than the prior measured average amount.
If students are able to reduce the amount of food waste for a particular day,
the student body would receive one sticker.
If the students are able to earn ten stickers within a month,
the school will reward the students with prizes such as delicious deserts.
As each month passes by,
we hope to see a change in the average amount of the school's food waste.
We start our Green Campaign with a daily average of 70L of food waste.
Through this campaign, we hope to see a reduction in food waste
as well as induce a correct mindset to the students about decreasing gluttonous habits.
Moving on to the long term procedures,
our team will be taking the previously mentioned Green campaign to the next level.
Once the student body has gotten used to the procedures of the campaign,
we aspire to be able to reduce enough food waste
so that we can save up a reasonable amount of portion from the school's lunch money deposit.
The money we are able to save by reducing waste
will be used for beneficial intentions by our school.
The money will be used to produce more of our school's special deserts
so that we can distribute them to senior citizens who live alone.
Through these charity events,
when we save our school lunch money,
we would be working to save our environment
while also helping the needy.
As our club also gains more popularity
we hope to be able to raise awareness to the whole student body
with other engaging events such as "wear all green day"
to increase the support of the environmental cause in our school.
In the future, we also intend to hold presentations
about the results and effects our team was able to achieve throughout the terms.
Those are the primary motives and goals of our club.
Our Green Campaign will be effective in a close future.
We hope for a lot of support and participation from the entire school
to achieve the goal of reducing our school's food waste.
