That stranded Carnival cruise ship “The Triumph” is expected to arrive in Mobile,
Alabama this afternoon.
It’s being towed by three tugboats through the Gulf of Mexico after a fire damaged the
ship’s propulsion system and left it largely without power. (VIDEO VIA CTV)
More than 4,000 people are on board, and amid reports of “deteriorating conditions”
and horror stories of sweltering heat and sewage —
ITV: “There has been queues for food, reports of scuffling over food. Very few toilets operating,
people sleeping in hallways and out on deck to get away from the stench and there has
been no air conditioning.”
So HLN points out the obvious: those passengers are ready for it all to end.
“People cheered and waved from the balcony of the Carnival Triumph when another ship
pulled up to drop off food. I bet they’ll be cheering a lot more today.”
To be fair, we should note Carnival has disputed reports of overflowing toilets and food and
water shortages, in statements saying the company is doing everything it can to keep
passengers comfortable.
In addition to a refund and $500 additional compensation for passengers, the company is
gonna lay a little low for a while. NPR reports it canceled 14 upcoming cruises.
