CDCs work basically focuses on four fundamental pillars,
four things that school systems ought to do
to help these young people who face so much social pressure.
First of all is to create a social environment
and a school setting that supports these young people
that makes them feel valued,
certainly that prohibits any kind of harassment and bullying
of them but also makes them feel welcome and frankly loved
in their school community.
Second is providing comprehensive ***
and STD prevention education that is relevant to them
that they feel is talking to them
about things they might experience in their lives.
Thirdly, it's making sure that these young people are linked
to services in the community
that can meet their needs whether it's health,
mental health, social service needs.
And fourth is collecting data so that we can tell their story,
that we can document the needs and the challenges
that they face and we can evaluate whether the activities
we're supporting are making a difference.
