In Brazil we don't have a wide freedom of expression
The group "Reporters Without Borders" was here recently
and did a report
the title is
"Brazil: the country of 30 Berlusconi's"
a reference to the former Prime Minister of Italy
one of the barons of the Italian media
there are 30 Berlusconi's in Brazil
the 30
controllers of the biggest media
corporations: newspapers, radio stations
and TV
our media legislation
has 50 years. They work freely, we don't have in Brazil a right of
reply
so that if one person,
an authority is deemed impaired
or suffers a character assassination by one of these press and media organizations
they don't have who to appeal, they go to a court and the processes may drag for years and years
and years... You British have the "Ofcom"
that regulates
radio and television
in United Kingdom
Says the Ofcom
one of its roles is to guarantee a wide range of quality radio and TV programs
offered as an appeal to diverse tastes and interests
this is content regulation
it's obvious that the Ofcom doesn't make prior censorship
but it gives the main lines
of what British radio and television should
go for
in Brazil if we take the discussion to this direction they'll say it's censorship
Why they do that? They say censorship is any kind of recommendation
because
currently those 30 Berlusconi's has full acting freedom
There's a bloggers group in which I'm included
who has made a counter point to these large media corporations
and we have been sued
all over Brazil
for authorities, and people from those big media corporations too
because they do not want to conduct this debate it is a debate of public
interest of all the country
so when you take to the court those communication
groups, these authorities has much more
influence power than we, mere bloggers
and that's why I say
that in Brazil
it does not exist
a wide freedom of expression that goes beyond
those 30 Berlusconi's
