What is a crew? Let's talk about that. It's the cameraman. It's the sound man. The producer
is the one who is responsible, for putting the story together. Sometimes the producer
and the cameraman, can be the same person. The correspondent is the person who appears
on camera. Now, the correspondent and the producer, work very closely together, in creating
the story, and then you have an editor. Now, usually an editor flies in with an edit pack,
or nowadays, most editors are using Final Cuts Pro, so they're using a laptop. You download
in to the laptop, to create the story. Now, you must remember, these are not long stories.
Producing for documentaries is a bit different, but the editor will download the raw footage,
that the cameraman shoots. He will record the audio track from the correspondent, and
most of these stories don't run any longer, than say, forty five seconds to a minute and
a half, max. If you're doing documentaries, it's a totally different situation. You usually
do not work with the correspondent. If you do, they will fly in for a few short days,
to wherever you're at, do the on camera appearances, and then they leave. The crew will may be
on location for three to four weeks, even much longer than that, putting the story together,
with the producer and the cameraman. There is no editing done on location, when you're
working on documentaries, for the most part. You might do rough edits, but that's basically
it,and using doves for translations.
