What does it mean when the global temperature increases by 2 degree Celsius?
It's a rise in sea level combined with intensifying typhoons, that's number 1 and 2.
Fires, in the semi-arid regions, which have long dry season, adding temperature increases the probability of wildfire
and I'm very very concerned that we're looking at 2 to 5 meters of sea level rise over the next 2 to 4 centuries.
And once you start this process, its what we call a tipping point, we probably cannot reverse it.
Remember the number :2:
Groups around the world including - Copenhagen conference, EU, Japan, US, China and India,
large international enterprises, Greenpeace, and political groups
agree with limiting global warming to 2 degree Celsius
If global warming exceeds 2 degree Celsius,
the ecosystem will lose its balance.
2 degree Celsius is the key to the survival of human beings.
Scientists have declared that
1 degree Celsius temperature increase will lead to a part of animal extinction
The species will be forced to either leave their original habitat or to become extinct
A 2 degree Celsius temperature increase will lead to the extinction of 30% of species
as well as increase occurrences of drought, risk of hunger and coral bleaching.
Human beings face the danger of extinction too.
A 3 degree Celsius temperature increase will lead to the inundation of 30% of coast
as well as heat waves and more droughts
More than 100 million people would have no water
A 4 degree Celsius temperature increase will lead to consecutive floods in Asia's and African's low-lying deltas
A 5 degree Celsius temperature increase will lead to 40% of all species to become extinct
Once the temperature increases by 6 degree Celsius,
human beings and most of the species will become extinct.
In 2009, the United Nation tried to convince people who have the right to decide on policy,
including the heads of every country's environment department and the international media
to watch the changes happening in the North Pole, Greenland.
When we reach the North Pole,
we see the floating icebergs reflected in the deep blue ocean
The view of the North Pole is magnificent.
But the wide wild Arctic is drowning in the saddest sorrow.
The icebergs we see are the mass lost from the 1000 years old Greenland ice sheet
These summers, the rate at which Greenland·s fast-flowing outlet glaciers melt has been increasing.
How fast will the end of the world happen?
According to scientists· estimation,
in one of the summers between 2020 to 2037,
which means in 10 years, sooner than later,
the ice sheet of North pole will completely disappear.
The disappearance of the North Pole ice sheet will result in two consequences.
Firstly,
the temperature of the Arctic will rapidly rise by 10 degree Celcius
Because the ice sheet functions as a mirror
which can reflect the sunlight.
However, as a consequence of melting, it is now turning into a black object which absorbs radiation of sunlight.
Combining these two factors, the effect is actually 200 times more
This is why the sea temperature will increase rapidly
Secondly,
The melting Greenland ice sheet can fuel the rise of sea level
International scientific communications found that
the speed of movement of Greenland's fast-flowing outlet glaciers has accelerated largely compared to 4 years ago
It's worse than we can imagine
Greenland ice sheet contains about 7 meters of sea level equivalent.
In other words, if you were to completely get rid of the Greenland ice sheet and put all the ice that is frozen on the land's surface as liquid water into the ocean,
sea levels around the world would be about 7 meters higher than they are today.
Overlooking the sea shore from a helicopter,
the pieces that broke off from Greenland's ice sheet now float on the water
The impact of global warming can be seen everywhere.
The speed of Greenland ice melting controls the destiny of human beings
What is plus-minus 2 degree Celsius?
Actually, if global warming rises by 2 degree Celsius
a lot of island countries will disappear
It's a small country located on the Pacific Ocean, Republic of Kiribati, composed of 33 islands.
The highest place is less than 4 meters above sea level.
The inhabitants are only about 1 km from the sea shore
Three islands have drowned because of the rising sea level caused by global warming
No significant conclusion has come out of the Copenhagen conference
The leaders of the world can only listen to announcements of the fall of small countries
We don't need any scientists' chart to prove the consequence of melting of the Arctic shelf.
This picture was taken in October 2009.
Due to the disappearing ice sheets,
this polar bear couldn't swim between sheets of ice to find food.
Therefore, it ate a cub to curb its hunger
On this white land,
the species representing white Arctic,
left this scary bloody picture at the risk of extinction.
The world is not purely white anymore.
However, this is just the introduction of the end of the world.
