>> Welcome to the Woman's Hospital at El Camino Hospital.
My name is Micheline Brogan and I've been an RN here since 1981.
I work in the Labor and Delivery Unit.
Congratulations if you're expecting.
Having a new baby is a wonderful experience.
If you're planning to have your baby at the Woman's Hospital, there's several things
that I want you to know before you arrive.
We've been voted one of the best places to have a baby by Bay Area Parent Magazine.
With over 4000 births a year, our hospital has provided a joyous beginning
for many families in our area.
Our nursing staff has been awarded magnet designation, given to hospitals
that provide excellence in nursing care.
Our wonderful nurses and staff will work with you and your doctor
to provide a welcoming environment for the birth of your baby.
We also provide outstanding lactation support and have a 99 percent breastfeeding rate.
It's the highest in the state of California.
Now let's begin our tour of the Woman's Hospital and follow a couple through their journey
so that you'll know what to expect on your big day.
This is where your baby will be born, the Women's Hospital.
When you arrive on campus, please come here
and not over to the emergency department in the main tower.
If you arrive during the day between 6 AM and 8 PM,
it's best to park in the Woman's Hospital garage
or in the additional parking structure across the street.
Use the front lobby entrance and take the elevator to the first floor.
At the main corridor, turn left and you'll see the doors for the Labor and Delivery Unit.
Go directly to the nurses' station, about halfway up the hall.
There you will sign in at the desk and the nurses will direct you to your room.

>> If you arrive at the hospital between 8 PM and 6 AM,
follow the maternity after hour entry signs.
Go up the driveway on the right side of the building, and the entrance is
at the end of the driveway on the left.
There's a phone on the wall next to the door
which will contact you directly to labor and delivery.
Someone will speak to you on the phone and buzz you in.
When you come in, go to the second door on the left then proceed
down to the nurses' station and sign in at the desk.
After hours, you may park in the outdoor parking lots near the Woman's Hospital or on the street.
Please do not leave your car in the driveway.
During the last few months of your pregnancy,
your doctor will give you a pre-admission packet from the Women's Hospital.
It contains certain forms you need to return to the hospital
at least one month prior to your due date.
This will make your admission to the hospital an easy experience for you.
Once you've been admitted, you'll stay in the same room for labor and delivery.
Our birthing suites offer you and your family many comforts.
We'll provide you a gown, or you can labor in something that you've brought.
Each spacious suite has a sleep chair,
a picture window with natural light, and a full shower and bathtub.
Feel free to adjust the temperature in your room.
The nurse will show you how to do it.
You can have up to three support people with you in the room during your labor.
You and your baby will be monitored when you arrive into the Labor and Delivery Suite.
We have wireless monitoring available.
This allows you to be up walking around freely in the halls during your labor.
In the Woman's Hospital, we are able to continuously evaluate you
and your baby while you're on the monitor from all locations
within the Labor and Delivery Unit.
At some point you may want medication or an epidural.
An anesthesiologist is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to meet your needs.
Once your baby is born, breastfeeding is initiated during the first hours of birth
to begin a successful breastfeeding experience.
In the event that you need to have a cesarean section,
you will deliver here in this operating room.
Our hospital has an expert surgical staff on hand at all times,
and we will take excellent care of you.
Should your baby need additional care,
we have a Licensed Level Three, Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery.
We call this the NICU.
It's staffed with Board Certified Stanford Neonatologists available 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
Each neonatologist guides the nursing staff, your pediatrician, the respiratory therapist,
and the other members of your baby's medical team.
After you've recovered from your delivery,
you and your baby will be taken to the Mother-Baby Unit.
We encourage you to keep the baby in your room with you.
We also have a nursery available if you find you need some rest.
You and your newborn will have the same nurse.
We call this the Mother-Baby Couplet Care.
There are many benefits to Couplet Care.
Keeping mother and baby together increases breastfeeding and bonding.
You learn each other's smells, voice, sound, and behaviors.
During your stay, our team will help you take care of your baby.
Breastfeeding is very important to your baby's health.
And if you need them, there are lactation consultants available.
We will make sure you and your baby get off to a great start.
We also have a Maternal Connection Store on the ground floor of the Woman's Hospital.
It is an award-winning mother-baby store that sells a variety of supplies
for new mothers and their babies.
Visiting hours are between noon and 8 PM.
The mother's spouse or partner is not considered a visitor and is welcome at any time.
Keep in mind there needs to be another adult present
to supervise any children who come to visit.
Finally, the time arrives to bring baby home.
Normal discharge time is 11 AM, and our team will provide you with discharge instructions.
Your baby must go home in a car seat.
This is not only the law, but it is vital to your baby's safety.
Once you've gone home, we will call you to follow-up and see how things are going.
We also have a number you can call for breastfeeding questions or concerns.
It's 650-988-8290.
Just as we offered classes before birth, we have a number of helpful classes on breastfeeding
and infant care after delivery including our free Breastfeeding Support Group.
You can call Maternal Child Education at 650-940-7302 for more information.
I hope you enjoyed the online tour.
