One year – I think it was my senior year – I got a job which was paid for by the
N.Y.A., the National Youth Administration which was part of the New Deal, and they paid
the University fifteen dollars a month which they could use to employ a student or students
for jobs that otherwise would never have gotten done. I penned…I worked in a building where
they were doing cancer research on mice – thousands of mice in cages, and I fed them. I know all
about mice. We had orange mice, yellow mice, little genetic experiments – big mice, tiny
mice. And that was paid for by the government. And it helped me to stay in school and did
the researchers a big favor. Because it would have meant one of these doctors would have
had to waste his time peeling lettuce to feed to these beasts. So all in all it was a good
investment.
