This week's EU agenda
This week on Monday, Agriculture ministers meet
for a working lunch in Brussels to discuss the
plummeting price of milk and other dairy products.
From Monday to Thursday, Brussels hosts the
European Week of Cities and Regions. The Open Days
focus on regional and local development, bringing together
the public, private and academic sectors. Speakers include
President Barroso, Commissioner Samecki and Cecilia Malmström.
On Monday and Tuesday, Stockholm plays host to the latest
EU Charter for Small Enterprises Conference. Themes include
cash flows for business growth, creativity and innovation,
and easier bankruptcy procedures.
On Wednesday in Brussels, Commissioner Almunia gives
the annual statement on the euro area. The 2009 report
weighs up the European Economic Recovery Plan.
Also Wednesday, Commissioner Samecki holds a joint
press conference with US economist Jeremy Rifkin.
The two are pushing the agenda in the fight against
climate change, with a view to sparking a post-carbon
“Third Industrial Revolution”.
On Friday, Luxembourg hosts the Transport Council.
Ministers debate a draft regulation on passengers’ rights
when travelling by sea, river or canal, for example when
journeys are delayed or cancelled.
Back in Brussels on Friday, Commissioners
Ferrero-Waldner and Piebalgs host the
Gulf Renewable Energy Conference.
Foreign and energy ministers from the EU,
Mediterranean and Gulf regions seek ways
to improve coordination and regulation.
Also on the agenda: energy efficiency, renewable energies
and the ongoing struggle against climate change�
