Hey it’s Kim Constable and you are watching WAHM TV your one stop shop for home business
support and training, and this is work at home Wednesday.
*************** ADVRTISEMENT *************
This ‘week’s question comes from Laura and Laura says “Dear Kim, I have been watching
your videos for a while now and I absolutely love how you hit the nail on the head every
single time and touch on a subject that I am struggling with. So in light of this I
was hoping you would be able to help me with something that has been bothering me for a
while. My Husband! I have been trying to get my business off the ground for ages now but
I find it really, really hard to juggle my family responsibilities and fit in time with
my business.
I am a full time stay at home mum and my husband pays to pay the bills, I do cooking, cleaning
of the house and also 95% of the childcare, this makes it virtually impossible to find
the time to work on my business. By the time the kids are in the bed I am exhausted and
I sometimes resent my husband for finishing his days’ work and either lying on the couch
watching television or going out to play sport, although I appreciate how hard he works to
keep us financially, I am also becoming resentful of him, how can I get him to help out more
so that I can work on my business and also have a little me time. Thanks in advance for
what I know will be a great answer.”
Laura this is such a good question and I am glad that you asked it, because it is one
of the most common problems that stay at home mums struggle with whenever they start businesses
and they become work at home mums. Just because you know in your mind what you want to achieve
with your business doesn’t mean that he does. So if you want him to mark in and help
a little more round the house so that you can help the business going there are a couple
of things that you need to do. This is the exact strategy that I used with my husband
Bryan which I have () for many, many years which is absolutely fool proof.
1. Take responsibility for what you want. Let me tell you one thing if you are clear
on what you want for your business and your life you will never be able to communicate
this information to your husband. Whenever you sit down to talk to him about it things
are going to get a little confuses and messed up and he is going to say “what is it that
you want” and you will be saying “I don’t know, I just want you to help more.”
So if you want anything from anybody whether it be a family member, your husband who ever,
you need to know precisely what you want.
2. Make an appointment with your Husband: let me ask you something if you had something,
you weren’t happy with your body or health what would you do. Well you would call him
and make an appointment and go see him discuss the problem and work together and get to a
solution. Why do we not do this at home, it is absolutely crazy. You can never walk into
the doctor’s office and tell oh my god I am hear I have a problem, I need you to help
me sort it out, he would kick you and say make an appointment and come some other time.
Men don’t work the same way women do, they are not organic () and they are not organic
thinkers. They like clear concise boundaries. So whenever I want something from my husband
I make an appointment with him, I take a time that is convenient with him whenever he is
in the right frame of mind to talk. My husband like most men I know, yours may be different,
but most men receive information when they are in the right frame of mind to receive
it. Don’t start a conversation when you guys are just about to go to sleep or whenever
he is watching sport. These are not good times to have conversations with your husband. Make
an appointment, gain his consent, tell him there is something you want to talk to him
about and go do it.
3. Be clear and concise: if you want something from your husband and you want him to help
more so that you can work on your business you got to bring your business plan to him,
you got to say here is the business plan, this is what I intend my business to be in
a year, if this is something that you want because this is something that I think will
help our family then how about we work this both together.
here is what I would suggest, and then you show him doing these things will benefit the
entire family.
