ECO Canada: Where the Environment's Very Best are Found
Describe your company culture AMEC is a multidisciplinary firm and we work
on some amazing projects, but what I think that sets us apart from other firms is the
human aspect. We really do work as a team and everyone who
comes to AMEC is expected to be part of that team, from the most junior member to the most
senior person.
How do you manage your Human Resource needs? We have some really innovative scheduling.
If you need to have flexibility in your scheduling, we offer that. And it's not just for new moms
or dads. We offer for people who might want to work on their triathlete skills.
We also have a very green focus and we have organic coffees, recycling and we have commuter
perks for people who choose to walk or ride to work.
We have a real fitness focus, so if you want to work out, we have a gym, in-house yoga,
in-house bootcamp. We will also pay for work out if you work outside the company.
AMEC is very fortunate to work on Calgary's new science center. It's a very exciting project
that's been built right downtown Calgary. So it's accessible to public transportation
and all Calgarians. It's very exciting.
But it is being built on what we call a brownfield site, it was a former landfill. Associated
environmental controls were needed to ensure it was built in a sustainable way. So we were
involved with everything in the engineering of it, the building of it, and it's been a
very exciting project for our young staff.
The first thing we had to was to make sure that they were going to be safe on an active
construction site. So they were trained in-house at AMEC with a number of required courses.
And then they went and did some site-specific training. And they kept that up. They also
had to do daily meetings with the staff to make sure they were safe no matter what task
they were doing.
All rainwater is collected on the site to be used as grey water in the facility. We
recycled as many materials as possible. On site we controlled dust, we controlled the
water that was supplied onsite. The building is being built to achieve a new LEED gold
standard.
For our younger scientists, this was really interesting for them to see how they could
be innovative in design to achieve these goals. And that status quo wasn't really enough.
We wanted to go beyond that. We wanted to do a project that we could be proud of into
the future.
How do you value your partnership with ECO Canada?
AMEC wants to hire qualified professionals from right across Canada. And ECO Canada has
supported us for many many years. In this country, we have job postings that we place
on the ECO Canada board or we hired strategically through ECO Canada's postings.
We have used their internship programs since 2002 right across Canada to put qualified
professionals right into our projects. We have sponsored several events with ECO Canada
that have been fantastic. And AMEC also has one of the highest numbers of certifications
from ECO Canada. So our partnership with them has been fantastic.
