My name is Emilio Subirá, I am a fine artist and I live in Seville.
I started, well, as a small boy, like everybody does, you know? Drawing in class,
I started to take my first steps with comics.
I started like this, then I entered university where I met my friend Rafael Jurado,
and with him we started to get into exhibitions.
We started to create what would later become our collective...
Sickestudio! Our ideas go around that, you know? Making art that is, ummm
functional, with the purpose of giving humans
an understating of the self, I don´t know, something between philosophy and art,
not just art without content.
From the moment I saw it, it became very easy for me to reinterpret
because the piece has a character in a suit, you know? The rich type,
and the truth is that it's something I use quite a lot so...
so that made things pretty easy.
I saw the rich character there, laughing at images, tight?
It seems to talk a bit about inequality.
Maintaining the character
and placing everything else inside his head, as if everything revolved around the decisions of this character.
The image of the business man in contrast with the ones of the kids.
Also the image of a fish and the fish hook,
kind of substituting from the other piece
let's say that the fish appeared as a pray because the eagle was hunting it.
Here it is the fish being fished by the bait on the fish hook.
The freedom of style that exists in comics, I always try to maintain that because in some way it is my origins.
In relation to comics, well... I really like underground comics.
Charles Burns,
Suehiro Maruo.
Actually, there is more freedom to express yourself, you know?
In a comic people are not so much...
judging the drawing. There is the drawing and the story, they are a team.
I decided to do it in drawing, with ink.
Basically ink technique, you know?
Playing with the size of the lines, using grids to apply shadows,
and after that the use of colored markers to add touches of colour.
I like that you know? Having...
jsut a bit of color, having that black and white and after little touches of color.
The title, Mr. Register, well...
in relation to this idea of society in the hands of the machinery of consumerism,
the machinery of money.
Lets say that when you work on top of something that already exists...
half of the work has been done for you, artists will always be grateful for this!
