So right now Shelley and I
are standing in the urban farm expansion site, and this is
where we're growing 300 plants of tomatoes.
This is for the Project Tomato group in September to come and harvest
about 900 pounds of tomatoes for the local foods night
in the dining halls.
The idea of Project Tomato is to show
incoming freshmen what urban agriculture and local agriculture in
Eugene is all about. In Project Tomato they'll
visit farms, including this one, around the area,
and harvest tomatoes, and in that process
they'll be shown the importance of growing
local foods and organic foods.
I'm pruning tomatoes and pulling off some of the vines that would actually
overwhelm the plant with weight
and also forcing it to concentrate its
its juju on just a couple of
branches so we'll get plenty of ripe fruit. ... That's a Cuore di Bue tomato,
and it's a fat heirloom
saucer, so there's not a lot of moisture in there,
and so it's a great for cooking down and it's a large tomatoes so
and we a *** out of our buck with these guys. Tomatoes have
a pretty unique smell — you get 'em over your hand so ...
It's hot, we're sweating, it's probably
the wrong hour to be working in the field, but, we smell like tomatoes and sweat.
