안녕하세요, hello everyone and welcome to Let's Speak Korean. I'm your host Lisa
Kelly and today is our 111th episode, just has the special, I don't know, it sounds special!
Sure, 빼빼로 데이.
And today's maifocus expressiois 시험 때만 되면 잠이 안 와. I can't sleep or I'm
very fatigued wheit's time to take exams or tests. How do you feel?
I feel great! 안녕하세요 I'm StepheRevere and I shared with you guys a little culture
there as well. 빼빼로 데이, there is a little snack that they have iKorea that
is about this long and, they're isimple pretzel shapes, just straight.
So they call November 11th, one one one one, they call that 빼빼로 데이 and everyone
gives out this snack to each other as a little gift.
But you know what. We're far from 빼빼로 데이. Because we're only at 111th, we'llhave
to do 900 more episodes for one thousand..
Well this is our, we'll give out just a few less. And you guys, we'll give some to you
guys, too.
Well, today I'm a little sleepy for exams, because next week I have exams. So I'm a little
sleepy. Anyway, 안녕하세요, 네오미입니다.
안녕하세요 Prabir 입니다.
It's so funny because back ithe day wheI used to take exams at school, I used to get sleep
during the tests, but here we're not sleeping.
Well, I guess...Koreans are very studious, probably because they are staying up late
studying, probably that's why they are not sleeping. Anyway, let's take a look at "Let's
Do It!"
Let's Do It
난 시험 때만 되면 잠이 안 와.
나도 잠이 안 와서 밤 샜어.
Okay we heard, the first expressiowe heard was 난 시험 때만 되면 잠이 안 와.
I can't get to sleep or I don't have much sleep wheit's time to take exams.
Right and ithis expressiothis 때 comes out here, right? You're talking about a time period.
You caput a nouifront of it and it becomes that time period.
Now do not, be careful, do not say a specific time or specific date. You do not want to
be using those ithis. You cannot say 일년전때, that doesn't work. 1년 때 or 1시 때 that
doesn't work. You casay 고등학교 때, wheI was attending high school.
Or you casay 대학교 때, those sorts of time periods are okay. You caalso use verbs
as well, right? You do that by putting it into the form we've seeso many times ㄹ 때,
okay? 영화 볼 때, wheI
watch a movie. 밥 먹을 때, wheI'm eating.
Right. So be reminded it's a general time period or it's something that you do igeneral
if you specify you cannot use 때. Okay, and the rest of the sentence. 만 되면 잠이
안와.
I can't sleep or I can't get to sleep or sleep does not come to me is the literal translation.
You want to try this once?
시험 때만 되면 잠이 안 와
시험 때만 되면 잠이 안 와
Like I said earlier, I get sleepy during tests. I don't know what this persois doing. And
the response was 나도, me too, 잠이 안와서 밤을 샜어요. 밤 새다, do you know
what this means?
You didn't sleep for the night.
You stay up through the night, 밤을 새다.
So let's try some with the nouformat, too. Like 밥 먹을 때 만 and thewheyou add
that 만 after that, notice it means that everytime this happens, whethis happens I
always have this situation. 밥 먹을 때만 되면 전화가 와요. 그쵸? 전화가
와요.
Everytime I eat, the phone rings. Okay, so you can't eat.
And notice we say the phone comes, right? 전화가 와요.
Let's try this with some other stuff: whenever it's time to go to lunch, someone comes to
visit me.
밥먹을 때만 되면
점심때, I specified
아, 점심 때만 되면 친구가 놀러와요.
That's good.
Cayou think of something else?
설날 때만 되면 서울이 텅 비어요.
I'm very impressed. 설날 is the national holiday, it's probably the biggest holiday
that Koreans celebrate, the lunar new year. Everybody goes back to their 고향, their
home towns. And thus, 서울 is empty is what he said, right?
Right, and 텅 is only used with this empty verb something showing that there's nothing
there.비어 있다 비어 있다 means to be empty. Very good.
And let's practice the pronunciatiowith 밤새다, 잠이 안와서 밤샜어요.
잠이 안와서 밤샜어요
잠이 안와서 밤샜어요
And the interesting thing is that you castay up all night, okay, but they have a way of
saying 날 샜어요, which means it took all day, you don't stay up all day but they
say it like this. For example if something is taking a long time,
Sometimes taping this teminute show takes all day!
So we casay oh 날 샌다 or 밤 샌다 so keep that imind.
I've got a good one. 금요일만 되면 교통이 나빠요.
Right, very good. Because it is a specific day, you don't use 때, you don't do that
you use 금요일 만 되면 and theone thing you got wrong though, you gotta be careful,
you don't say 교통이 나빠다 because if you're talking about that,
you're talking about the conditions of the actual transportation.
For example the roads are bad or something like that.
Thank you. The city has bad transportatio이 도시의 교통이 나빠요, you could say
something like that, iEnglish we say the traffic is bad, and we kind of think 교통 is traffic,
right . 교통 is not traffic all the time, you'd say 교통이 복잡해요. It's crowded.
WheStepheis saying that, that means transportatioor the status or the conditioof roads or transportation.
But very good, good effort. Alright, let's go oto Wrap it Up.
Wrap It Up With Lisa and Stephen
난 시험 때만 되면 잠이 안 와. I can't get to sleep during exams.
나도 잠이 안 와서 밤을 샜어. I stayed up all night because I couldn't sleep
either.
난 시험 때만 되면 밥을 못 먹어. I can't eat during exams.
나도 밥을 못 먹어서 머리가 아파. I can't eat either, so I have a headache.
Aw, Steve said at the end there 나도 밥을 못 먹어서 머리가 아파요. I guess
you get headaches wheyou're hungry?
Sure, doesn't everybody? I thought everybody got headaches whethey get hungry!
No, not really
Starts ithe stomach and works its way up to the head. I never skip a meal.
Alright, let's, you hear people saying 밤샜다 밤샜어, a lot. 어제 밤에 밤 샜어요.
Let's give the reason, for example, how about this? How would you say I worked all night
so I stayed up all night. I worked, Naomi?
일 하느라고 밤 샜어요.
Very good. You casay 일 하느라고 밤 샜어요 or 일하다가 밤샜어요. You
partied all night, that's why you stayed up all night. How do you say that?
노느라고 밤 샜어요.
Ainteresting thing here is that 놀다 which means play, literally, is the word they used
to say I partied or go out to party. You'll call your friends up and say 놀자!
This doesn't mealiterally play like kids, but it means come out, let's party, let's
go eat or watch a movie. Hang out.
IAmerica you would only say let's play to a child. Childreonly say let's play, but iKorea,
adults say it too.
So it means, hang out or party. So you hear, 놀자 or 어젯밤 놀았어요. I played,
no, I hung out, I had a good time, I partied. So that's ainteresting one.
And instead of work, you're supposed to be doing some work 어제 일했어? 아니,
놀았어. I just didn't work is what that means ithat context, right?
Actually I stay up all night actually because 술 마시느라고 밤 샜어요. I usually
end up staying that a lot. Alright, is that all for today?
That's about it! It's time to go home!
Aw 끝날 때만 되면 아쉬워요.
Oh really?
Thank you for joining us, we'll see you next time. Bye-bye!
