We get lots of questions about breakfast because you know it really is the most important meal
of the day. But in particular one of our viewers wants to know, what are some good ideas for
breakfast if youÕre a diabetic?
Same idea as if youÕre not a diabetic. A healthy breakfast is a healthy breakfast thatÕs
suitable for most everyone. One thing you want to be careful about if youÕre a diabetic
is what is your meal plan? How many exchanges do you have of carbohydrates, protein, and
fats so you need to make sure that the breakfast that you eat is according to your meal plan.
But when it comes to making those choices so many great choices. I love Greek yogurt.
Greek yogurt, you can put it in a smoothie. You can make a smoothie with some fruit and
some wheat germ and some really high protein delicious non-fat yogurt.
You can also use the same yogurt and make a parfait. Have a breakfast parfait layered
with some berries, topped with some granola. Great way to get some protein, some carbohydrates
give you the energy you need.
Another thing is eggs. Eggs are a great source of protein and probably on your meal plan
so think about maybe an egg sandwich. Have an egg with an English muffin or a half a
bagel, a little bit of cheese. Or you can have an egg with a waffle, or a pancake or
whole grain toast or a small omelette. So eggs are really good for you. And the American
Heart Association says an egg a day is OK if youÕre a healthy adult. So think eggs
when youÕre thinking about breakfast.
Oatmeal, a whole grain. Top it with some nuts and maybe dried fruit. Watch the amount of
dried fruit because when you concentrate it gets a little bit sweeter although itÕs perfectly
fine, it counts as a carbohydrate.
Last nightÕs leftovers. Those are good choices. There really is an endless number of healthy
breakfasts. You just have to make sure they fit into your meal plan and then be creative.
Try some different things. Think outside that cereal box and try to come up with some ideas
that might be new, portable if youÕre running out the door or something that you can sit
down and leisurely eat and see where you might be able to throw in some vegetables. When
you have eggs for breakfast itÕs an easy place to toss in some leftovers from last
night.
