I'm Carol Fox. You can find me at Carolina Small Town Living dot com. Let's
take a tour of the Matthews Community Farmers Market.
The farmers market is located in the heart of historic downtown Matthews
North Carolina. It's a well established market that offers a place for the
community to gather on Saturday mornings and it represents the best of the Matthews
lifestyle.
The first Saturday in April is opening day for the spring market. My husband and
I visited the market recently and enjoyed shopping for early spring vegetables and
taking in the special activities at the market.
What will you find at the market?
The market was established in nineteen ninety one to offer food from farmers
and other vendors within fifty miles of Matthews. You'll find vegetables in season
all summer long. On Saturday we found lettuce and greens, radishes and onions
and because spring came early this year beautiful strawberries.
Other vendors offered tomato plants, fresh cut flowers, homegrown eggs and
local honey.
You can also buy locally produced beef and pork, goat cheese
and baked goods.
The Matthews farmers market opens at seven fifteen a_m_. It's important to
arrive early for the best selection.
Local chefs order from the market's farmers
At seven thirty a_m_ on Saturday there was a chef's secrets class showing how
to make vinaigrette for salad.
At eight thirty cooking demonstrations by a local chef entertained and
informed visitors about how to make grits and how to serve them with various
toppings. The grits were delicious.
The Matthews farmers market is located on grounds adjacent to the historic Renfrows
Hardware.
Parking is on the former site of a cotton gin that served area farmers.
The market's community house is a one hundred year old structure that once
sheltered the cotton farmers while their cotton was ginned.
After you spend time at the farmers market you may want to check out Renfrows
Hardware next door. In operation for over a hundred years, the hardware carries
many old-time items and it's the only place I know where you can buy ladybugs.
