OverDrive's catalog includes more than one million digital titles from more than
one thousand publishers
overdrive provides resources
especially to public libraries
as a way
for patrons to access e-books
and audio books especially
you will be observing a demonstration of how to access e-books and audio books
through overdrive as a patron of Birmingham Public Library
welcomed to Birmingham Public Library or b p l
serving
Jefferson county
b_p_l_ like many other public libraries has a subscription with OverDrive
again overdrive is a company that provides access to electronic books or
e-books and audio books
to access OverDrive through b_p_l_
first you must scroll down the home page
which is the first page every time you come to b_p_l's website
right now I am on b_p_l's home page
I'm going to scroll down until I see the larger text that says download e-books
and audiobooks
I will double click on that text and overdrive will come up
now that you're on the OverDrive page
i will explain some of the features available
first in the top right hand you have the option of looking at your account
where you can see the books you have checked out holds you have pending and
fines you may have accrued
help is where you can click if you have specific issues with overdrive that you
have a question about
search is where you can type the name of a book and author or any other
identifying feature of the book
before we start searching for a book
we need to sign in to our account
so double click on sign in located in the upper right-hand corner of your screen
now I'm asked to enter my library card number
i'm going to click
sign in went to enter my library card number
and click sign in
now i'm logged into my account as you can see on my bookshelf i already have a
book checked out
i am going to pretend that i don't have The Help and that I am looking check
it out
I have two options. First I will show you how to find it using one option
First I need to know what kind of book I'm I looking for.
I know I'm looking for the book The Help.
I want to find an e-book of it.
first I know the book is fiction
I'm going to click on the menu
and i'm going to be given the menu of all the different categories
of books an audio books that are available
I'm going to go to e-book fiction because i want an e-book a copy
and click "all fiction"
when I click "all fiction" I am given over six thousand options of what I can check
out
I know it's going to take a while to find The Help if I were to just go through
page after page. To narrow my results
over here on the left hand side
there's a bar that says "search within results." I'm going to click there and
type The Help
click "submit."
here comes up one options for an e-book
I know it's the e-book because I searched under e-books and I also know it's
an e-book because in the upper right-hand corner of the book is a picture of a
book
I'm going to show you now the other option
remember at the beginning I mentioned the search bar where you can type
anything about a book
I'm going to type the title of the book in the search bar and click the
magnifying glass
so click here
types The Help
click the magnifying class
and I'm brought to a page
with more options and two versions of The Help
why would I need two?
well one is the e-book
one is the audio book and I know this because in the corner
there's a picture of headphones meaning that that is the audiobook
but again I only want the e-book so I am going to go and click the book that has
the picture of the book in the corner
when I click it, I'm taken to a page
that has the picture of the book
a rating of the book
other recommended books for me because I chose The Help
a description of the book provided by the publisher
awards that the book won and information about the author Kathryn Stockett
normally where it says "go to bookshelf" it would actually say "borrow"
but because I already have The Help checked out
I am going to click "go to bookshelf"
if I were to click "borrow" it would ask me to download
I have already downloaded it and I downloaded the EPub book version
you may be asked to check out a Kindle version also
I don't have a Kindle. I only have a laptop, my regular computer. So I would
click Epub book.
I'm also given an expiration date
this just means that on May 6th,
after 4:55 PM
the book will no longer be available on my bookshelf.
once I click "download"
the book will start downloading to my computer
you have now checked out your first e-book
from OverDrive
let's review what we learned about OverDrive today
we've learned that OverDrive provides digital media to libraries and schools
providing access to e-books and audiobooks.
we learned how to access OverDrive through Birmingham Public Libraries web page
and we learned how to find and check out a book using OverDrive
we hope that this presentation helped you learn how to access e-books and
audio bucks through your public library's version of OverDrive.
