KAITLIN THOMAS: I first came to the Career Resource Center
when I started out at PCC because I took a career guidance class.
We had an assignment to come here and do some research about a
few different careers that we were deciding between.
The career assessments that I did taught me more
about my skills and strengths.
It showed me that I was a dependable person, that I was flexible,
that I like using math and science, reasoning, and also,
that I liked being in a leadership role and working with people.
CAREER COUNSELOR: These would be skills
that you would enjoy using every day in a work environment.
THOMAS: I went into the assessment knowing
that I wanted to do something in the medical field
so it wasn’t surprising when it came up with things like nursing
and dental hygiene and radiography, things like that,
but what did surprise me was when it came up with things
in the restaurant business and education.
It really did open up more things to me that I hadn’t realized were possibilities.
COUNSELOR: Now, you had mentioned
that you have an interest in nursing as well
and so this chapter includes all the different kinds of nurses... (fade out)
THOMAS: There is not really a replacement for having an actual,
physical person to talk to about your life and your goals
and basically what you want to do, not just the way you look on paper
as far as the skills that you have and the classes that you’ve taken,
but what you want to do with your life
and how you can make it happen.
COUNSELOR: The idea is, hopefully, to broaden the perspective
and to get you to think about career options.
THOMAS: To get experience and work on my skills
in education and leadership, I volunteered to do some presentations
as a teaching assistant in a career class.
[TEACHING CLIP] It says you’re going to want to select something
that is eight to twenty letters and numbers.
THOMAS: Education wasn’t something that I was really interested in
before so it was kind of surprising once I did some work
in that area that I really did like it.
Not knowing what my goals were was really frustrating.
It kind of feels like you’re just taking classes aimlessly
and you don’t have anything you’re working towards,
but the career center really helped me to put an end goal in mind,
kind of like a finish line that I want to cross with school.
Right now, my solid goal that I’m working towards
is definitely nursing and I have all of the prerequisites done
and I have put in my applications and I also have a backup plan.
I’m working toward radiography.
I’ve put in the applications for that and dental hygiene and then,
long term wise, looking into education,
not necessarily the way I thought about it before
but education relating to the nursing field, helping other nurses.
The Career Resource Center isn’t just about finding jobs
and things that you can do for work.
It’s about finding something that you would like to do
with your life. It’s really a long-term goal setting center. 00:02:31.00,00:02:31.14
