Shortly after the invention of the light bulb people began measuring brightness in terms
of candle power. This has persisted for over 100 years, despite the fact that it's not
a scientific measurement.
The result has been an excess of exaggeration with manufacturers claiming 40,000, 80,000,
even a million candle power brightness. Fortunately, there is a new standard of testing called
lumens value that top manufacturers like Pelican are now using.
A hollow sphere is used to capture all the available light from the source. The light
is dispersed inside the sphere and measured using a calibrated light sensor.
If you're shopping for a flashlight, check the lumens value. It's the only number you
can can trust to measure the brightness of a light.
