Floods continue to impact eastern Australia. As of Thursday, December 30, nearly 4,000
people have been forced to leave their homes, with thousands more who are preparing to do
so as floodwaters from ongoing rains continue to rise. Half of Queensland state has been
declared a disaster area, and state Premier Anna Bligh launched a relief fund of AU$1
million while the nation’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard pledged to match the amount
in federal funds. Upon first hearing of the dangerous conditions earlier in December,
Supreme Master Ching Hai expressed her concern and prayers as she requested that our Association
members please contact local officials to see if more help is needed for the flood-stricken.
Saying that funds for their urgent needs are available, she also asked that they go if
possible to aid the most affected.
Our gratefulness, Your Excellencies and all other personnel for your prompt assistance,
as well as for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s heartfelt concern. We pray for the protection
of the Australian people and that such weather extremities are eased through our more considerate,
eco-balancing ways. Residents evacuated in Australia amid lengthy flood forecast
