Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei
is comparing illegal Government spying on Dotcom to the Tuhoe raids.
She says doubts have been cast on the reliability
of the Crown and police, and this has implications
on what happened during the police raids on Tuhoe.
It's another media circus.
Dotcom's lawyers claim the police acted illegally, raiding his home.
It's a saga that is following the same pattern as the Tuhoe raids.
It's come back to haunt them.
First, as you said, the Tuhoe raids.
Secondly, with Dotcom.
That's what's wrong with the Government
and their secret surveillance on Maori, Pakeha and whoever else.
While these two characters are poles apart,
the Labour Government used the same law philosophy on both.
And under a National Government...
The Government acted unlawfully
- that's where the concern lies despite good or bad intentions.
There's still that concern for the public
- whether they're being watched secretly.
It's OK for them to break the law,
but if it was us, we'd be thrown in prison.
And that's where Iti and Kemara ended up;
claims of terrorist activity dropped,
so were the charges of criminal activity.
It took five years before that verdict was made.
For Dotcom, it's nine months, and still counting.
