California fires coming under control. Of the more than 200 blazes begun by lightning
in the northern part of the state last week, all except the McDonald Fire were contained
by Sunday, August 1. That blaze, which has consumed nearly 11,000 acres, is now 75% contained
with completion expected by Monday, August 2. No structures have been damaged, and firefighters
are now working to minimize effects on the habitat of a native bird, the sage grouse.
To the south, three major wildfires were on their way to full containment as of Saturday.
The Bull Fire had scorched over 16,000 acres and destroyed 14 buildings, while the West
Fire demolished 30 structures. A third wildfire, dubbed the Crown Fire, spread over 14,000
acres before the fire department succeeded in containing it on Saturday evening. California
state Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said that a recent shift to hot, dry weather heat
had been a significant factor in the igniting of the flames.
Our grateful thanks, California fire departments and personnel, for your brave and tireless
efforts to halt the flames and ensure the safety of human and animal residents alike.
Our prayers for a gentler tomorrow as humanity honors nature’s balance through a kinder
consideration of all beings
