Tres Tew here. I'm an instructor at Yshua's Ryu Martial Arts on behalf of Expert Village
I'm going to be showing you how to use your jacket or your hooded sweat shirt in a defense
situation. OK, now you can use your jacket or your hoodie or both at the same time even
as a shield to deflect knife attacks and even stop knife attacks. So what I'm going to do,
I'm pulling my hood up to kind of maybe deflect, this is not a guaranteed, it's not guaranteed
that he's not going to puncture or slash through but it's a possibility that it's deceptive,
he'll cut through just the material, or he'll glance across the material and won't actually
cut my body. Also, I can take a sleeve and just wrap up my arm to keep it protected and
as he comes in with a strike, I can block, I can go directly for the knife and if I hit
it hard enough, come in. I can completely get rid of the knife threat and it's probably
not going to do much damage. As you can see this is a very thick layer over my hand and
my forearm so I can use this to my advantage. Use it as a shield. Go and retrieve your knife.
Now, if he comes straight at me I can use it to block. Come on an overhead strike. OK,
I can use this in a couple of different manners. Also, you may have some loose particles that
you can kind of whip into his face. The zipper's very effective to catch someone in the eye
with, if you've got that, just kind of flip it around and catch them in the eye. Just
be aware that you've got all that but you can use all that as a shield to ward off the
attacks. But that is not a very effective offensive weapon, again, it's just a shield.
A shield is a defensive kind of tool. You are going to have to use your other hand to
go in offensively if you want to permanently end the attack. So, that's how to use your
jacket as a shield.
