Welcome to This Week @Minnesota.
The end of the spring semester has arrived and thousands
of students donned caps and gowns for one
of the nearly two dozen graduation
and commencement ceremonies held on campus.
Renovations to the traditional commencement venue,
Northrop Auditorium, mean that most ceremonies will be held
in either Mariucci Arena or Ted Mann Concert Hall
until construction is completed in the summer of 2013.
Part of Washington Avenue
on campus will close beginning Monday, May 16 to make way
for the Central Corridor light rail Project.
Vehicle traffic will no longer be possible on Washington
between Pleasant Street and Oak Street, although pedestrians
and bikes will still be able to navigate the area.
The corridor is expected to begin service in 2013.
Author and A Prairie Home Companion host,
Garrison Keillor, spoke at the Friends
of the Minnesota Libraries dinner on Tuesday.
This is a generation that is intensely busy
and it needs a sanctuary and the library can be that sanctuary,
can be a workspace where busy people who, when they need
to cut out distractions and do what they said they wanted to do
and finish that screenplay, write that paper, do that story,
can go and get focused.
Pull themselves together.
