SEB: Attention is everybody here?
SEB: Joachim Pastor is in the studio !
SEB: good evening
hello i'm going to do a small
video to explain my live
it has been a long time since
people have asked me to do it, and now i've
finally decided to record it.
SEB: it is about time !
So this is my live, it is a Lemur, which
is a magnificent collector controller , this
superb homemade controller, made of wood.
SEB: Wood from the trees.
And finally this high quality controller which
weights about 100 grams,
i use it only for the effects on the master.
SEB: So you're going to explain all of it in details.
We're going to start with an important machine,
my live is composed of already made tracks,
but also 100% improvisations parts, different
every times. Here i've got a sequencer, where i can
prepare the sounds before the show, and then
i can improvise during the live.
let me show you how it works.
The upper line here is just kicks.
here i'm placing my 4 kicks, this
lines here is hats. then i can mute every elements.
here i've got open hat. i can modulate the elements,
the decays, for the hats.
SEB: So to sum up, this is like a virtual TR 909.
yes exactly, but what is nice, is that i can
choose any sound i want in the sequencer,
here it's basic drums, but i can put vocals, melodies;
basically anything i want. for example here , on the
3 last lines, i put toms, so i can make
some kind of basslines.
On this tom, i can choose the pitch, i can also automate it.
it always works very well on a big sound system.
Here i've got some beatrepeats on each elements,
for example i can loop the clap.
SEB: So Joachim, can you explain what is this "gay pride" colored
controller ? This controller is used exclusively
for FX, almost everything is connect on the master.
i'm going to launch and track and show how it works
and how i use it.
So the first thing is a reverb with some phaser,
i can change the volume and change parameters.
here i've got a simple delay, also a pingpong delay,
let's do them all. Here i've got reverb, redux, or filter.
this we will see later. here i can cut the low frequencies,
of the high frequencies.
Finally, this is a beat repeat. i'm showing the delay.
Now the pingpong delay, that i can modulate.
Reverb, basic, redux, filter. this the filter i was
talking about, here i cut the basses, the high,
i can put a filter. I can add reverb on the beat repeat,
or delay. this is it. Very good, we understood the system.
I'm going to show a thing i love on my Live, the 303.
SEB: But you told that "this" was the main thing of your show.
Well actually it's just in case the crowd doesn't answer.
So the 303, people sometimes don't know the name,
but they sure know the sound of it. the TB-303 !
SEB: Let me show you the REAL TB-303.
presets for the notes, and
then i can modulate everything live. Cutoff, Resonance,
Slide time, Step length, envelope modulation, distortion
Here we can hear the cutoff, the step lenght, the slide time,
and most importantly the resonance, that gives this acid vibe.
i like to do that with the sequencer. That's what i was going to
ask you, put a kick please.
Joachim Pastor are you there ? Ok so a last little thing i'm going to explain
(because the live is very complex, and then the video would be boring
SEB: Oups wasn't i supposed to record ?
what, are you not recording ?
SEB: huh yes i am.
Well that's great, i was talking to my audience.
So you have to know some tracks are completely
dismantled, beat, basses, melodies etc...
i've got a MaxforLive plugin called Buffer Shuffler,
which i recommend.
i can change a melody very simply, but it keeps
the tone and the keys, so that most of the time
everything still sounds in tune.
for example on this loop, there is a small looped melody.
i can load the preset i've made for this melody.
if i activate the Buffer Shuffler, it will change the melody live.
This is the base melody, this is the changed melody.
i will now clic randomly, and it will
make a new melody. we can explore a new thing,
maybe add some effects. A clap here and there...
