The Ontario Science Centre is an interactive, science museum.
We are happy to host over a million visitors every year.
And we offer all kinds of programs –
from public programs, from theatrical experiences, to specially-
ticketed events, OMNIMAX experiences, school programs and exhibits.
Our customers come with all levels of ability and sometimes with special needs,
and we work very hard at accommodating them.
First of all, we help them plan their visit in advance.
When our visitors arrive on site, our parking lots are accessible;
we have extra-wide parking spots; of course we offer accessible parking for people.
We have automated doors,
we have special service counters that can meet the needs of all people,
especially folks who might be in a wheelchair.
We have maps, and we have also web information
that people can download in advance of their visit –
things like our visit guide for the blind and visit guide for support persons also.
In our OMNIMAX theatre, we have assistive listening devices to help people enjoy the film.
Also, we’re about to put in captioning devices in the OMNIMAX theatre,
and we can assign theatre seating.
All of the Science Centre staff have been trained in accessibility features and
awareness for people with special needs.
Frontline staff of the Science Centre, especially,
are experts and are very good and work well together in making sure we meet
and anticipate the needs of all our guests.
We came here to see the Harry Potter exhibit, and that was really awesome.
It’s very accessible; it’s very big and spacious.
And there’s like no carpets –
it’s easier and faster for me to get around if there’s no carpets.
They’re nice and friendly and helpful.
It makes you want to come back, knowing that the people are nice.
So for kids who have disabilities in vision and sound, this exhibit’s great.
It’s called Sound Panels.
We use these bright colours,
which can help with different abilities to see and different abilities to read colour.
And within this too, you can make a different setting.
And once you hit one of those colours, this entire wall changes.
You can make different sounds as you go along.
And it makes you feel like you can still be a part of it,
no matter what your differences are.
We want people to enjoy the experience.
We want to make sure that we removed any barriers.
And we understand that customers will be loyal to us and will visit us again.
