Hello I'm Simon Craig
and I'm here today in Corbridge, in Northumberland,
looking for a little bit of history. The weather's a bit iffy,
but hey, it's January. Corbridge is well known for its history,
particularly Roman history, but today we are looking for something a little
bit more recent. We're looking for something that we can connect
with, something from the Industrial Revolution.
What used to be here, on the edge of Corbridge was Corbridge Firebrick and Sanitary Tube
Works. Well, that's what it used to be.
What have we got left. Now these discrete houses
are on the sight of an old factory. Not much remains of the old factory.
However there is this. Its private land
but they let us come in to see the kilns
These two bottle shaped kilns are Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
These tiles may have been baked in our Bottle Kilns.
The brickworks opened in about 1840 and ran all the way through till about 1910.
The kilns are about 14 to 15 meters tall and about 10 meters in diameter.
Once filled, these kilns would have taken over a week
to bake tiles and earthenware for the local farm use.
Behind the Bottle Kilns are a couple of downdraught kilns and a chimney.
