Hello. This is John Stanley with writing tips for the IELTS exam.
This unit looks at structures and vocabulary related to the use of the words
"need", "necessary", "necessity" and "essential".
On our small planet flood disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.
In wealthier countries such as Australia
some local governments are asking people about what are their greatest needs
during disasters.
People have different views.
Some say
the most essential things you need in a disaster are clean water and food.
Others say that disasters often happen at night
so power and light are absolutely necessary.
Other people argue that access to medical help is an absolute necessity
as well as disaster information.
There are many different opinions about what is essential
and necessary in a disaster in order to survive.
Others want to know what causes flood disasters.
Increases in flood disasters may be due to climate change.
One significant cause of climate change
is the unnecessary use of aircraft
for short-haul flights in Europe and the USA.
Both regions have good rail services.
The use of unnecessary short-haul flights speeds up climate change through
pollution from aircraft.
So we could say non-essential short haul flights in Europe and America
means more deaths by drowning in the low-lying countries of S.E. Asia
nd on islands across the Pacific
where people are already having to evacuate to higher land.
These people are so poor
they have insufficient resources to meet even their most basic and essential needs.
They have little help to meet their needs
when their houses and cities are flooded.
We've been talking about the use of needs, essential, necessary and necessity
uring disasters.
