Ngati Whatua ki Kaipara are up in arms about the increase in rates
to pay for a sewage system in Mangawhai.
The Kaipara District Council are emptying their pockets to pay
for the $35 million project.
Mangawhai is north of Auckland City.
Here's Raiha Johns with the details.
The people of Kaipara are up in arms
about the increase in rates in their district.
There's only one word to describe it
and that's 'bad'.
I feel sorry for the unemployed and the pensioners.
Of all Maori living in the Kaipara District,
11% are unemployed.
The rates in Mangawhai itself have dropped 15%,
but they have gone up in the surrounding areas
to pay for their new sewage system.
We have to pay for other people's filth.
The councillors responsible for raising the rates 50% in some areas
have been dismissed
due to the million-dollar debt they owe as well.
I've heard everything through the newspapers and the TV.
The council never consulted us.
New commissioners will join the Council next week.
Raiha Johns, Te Karere.
