>> HARRINGTON: My name is Gillian Harrington and I'm headteacher at Great Kimble School.
What we're doing here today is we're celebrating Grace's winning of the competition that was
set up last summer term by our local police to design a car sticker to encourage drivers
to slow down.
>> HARRINGTON: Can you give Grace a round of applause?
>> (APPLAUSE)
>> ROGERSON: As the chairman of the Neighbourhood Action Group, an organisation with the police
and local people we got involved because speeding traffic is one of the key issues in this area.
The NAG conceived the idea of having a competition, what could we do locally without too much
money, to have an impact on speeding traffic, and the idea was a competition that children
could be involved with, and then move forward from there with the presentation that we've
got today. Helped by County Council money to fund the stickers themselves.
>> ROGERSON: In Kimble you've got the A4010 which is quite a fast major road with a 50mph
limit on it, but with the children locally here, the message to slow down for children
is important.
>> HARRINGTON: The children need to learn how to keep themselves safe, we do a walking
crocodile down to The Swan pub which is about half a mile. Several times the children comment
then, about the speed of cars coming towards them. I think our children know that they
can make a difference in their school community. The thing that's been fabulous about this
is the fact that even though they're only young, they can make a difference in the wider
community.
