Hi. My name is Lauren Kalman. I’m a visual artist living, working, and teaching in Detroit,
Michigan. The studio’s a mess. It’s a beautiful day in Detroit, and I’m thrilled
to be part of the Renwick Gallery’s 40 Under 40 Craft Futures exhibition. I have a background
in metalsmithing and art and technology, and as is demonstrated by the studio floor, I
am teaching myself how to sew. For the past few years, I’ve been instructing wearable
objects and producing photographs and videos of them worn on the body. Through this work
I’ve been trying to produce interactions that are both seductive and grotesque. I have
an interest in the way we may use objects to negotiate our understanding of illness,
deformity, beauty, and class, and more recently, how consumer objects are used to visually
augment gender and sexuality. It is an honor to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Renwick
Gallery with all of the other amazing artists in the 40 Under 40 exhibition. And I’m really
excited to see the exhibition when it opens in July.
