Today we're going to be comparing Network or IP cameras such as the
D-Link DCS-930L and the DCS-932L and pitting them against webcams such as this.
We're going to look at some of the similarities and differences between
the use in the home, their physical features and some additional features they may or may
not have.
So let's start with network IP cameras.
Looking at some of the physical similarities between a network IP camera and a web camera,
the first thing you'll notice is that they both have a lens and both
usually have a microphone. That's about where the similarities end.
This is a DCS-932L Wireless N Network Camera and it has an ethernet port in the back.
Most all network IP cameras do because it connects directly to your network.
It has a power plug as well and that's it.
It does not connect directly to a computer only a network.
As opposed to the web camera such as this will usually have a USB port on the back.
Sometimes they are also embedded into the monitor on a laptop or even a desktop computer.
I'm at the front door because network IP cameras started off
for surveillance use. Since then in the home they've evolved into many other
things such as nanny cams, pet cameras and even monitoring your children
while they are doing their homework.
One of the special capabilities of a network IP camera is being able
to remotely view the live feed from your network camera from a computer over the internet.
Many devices also allow you to view it from a mobile device
such as iPhone, iPad or even an Android device.
Some of the other advanced features for IP cameras is the ability to
setup motion detection, send yourself email alerts when motion is detected
or even schedule motion detection to work at certain hours of the day.
I'm sitting in front of the family computer right now because that's
where I find myself and my family most commonly using a webcam.
Webcams are most commonly used for video chatting, video conferencing
and even video blogging.
And that's because they have better resolution which gives you a better picture
and better audio quality.
Some of the problems with a webcam is that it always needs to be connected
to a computer and there is no easy way for remote viewing.
Network cameras and web cameras both serve different functions, so you don't
have to choose between one or the other.
D-Link offers many great network IP cameras such as the
D-Link DCS-930L and the newer D-Link CS-932L which gives
you night viewing capability.
The other great thing about network cameras is that they are new
for home use and people are finding lot of different uses for them such
as monitoring your pets, monitoring your children when they are doing their homework
and even the standard surveillance uses.
So we highly recommend going out and getting yourself one.
