Welcome to UTS Library's video on finding books. To search for a book, click in the
left most corner of the catalogue search box. So we'll begin by just putting in the title
of a book "visualising research".
And here are our two results. They're both the same book, only one of them is a print
version, with a call number, and the other one is an electronic version which you would
look at on the internet.
If I click "visualising research" in print form here, you'll see the most important information
in this box here. This information will let you know what campus it's at, what its call
number is and whether it's available for borrowing.
To find out which floor your call number is on, just click the little link and it will
bring up a map of the floor where the book lives.
If the book you want isn't available like it is here, you'll see some red dates when
the book is due back. If they're all borrowed or if you want to move your book from campus
to campus, you can use the Request Item button to get a copy sent to you. If all of our copies
are being borrowed and aren't due back for a while you can click on the green Bonus+
icon to source the book from another library. This service is free and the delivery times
range from about 4 to 9 days, depending on the university that supplies the book.
Back to the electronic version, if we click on the title we'll see on the page that opens
up, a blue link called Electronic Resource. Click this and it'll load the book. You don't
borrow an eBook generally, you just read them online. They're all a little bit different,
sometimes you can download chapters, sometimes you can't.
Ok, so, as well as doing a title search, we can search for a subject we are interested
in, like black holes. What the catalogue will do is try and find books called black hole
or black holes first, then it will try to find books that mention black holes as a subject
heading or as a keyword in the book description. There are various ways to filter your results,
you can filter by whether the format is print or online, you can filter by the location,
and the author, and the year, and more!
If you'd like to filter by subject area, you can do that by using this coloured ribbon.
For example, this purple area will show you only the science-related books on black holes.
That concludes this video. If you have a question, why not use the comments box below, or us
the Ask a Librarian service available from the Quick Links area of the UTS Library homepage.
Thanks for watching.
