>> The theme for this conference is Teachers who have supported me. I believe that for
me this is the most important part of my education and so many teachers have had an impact on
my education from the very beginning at kindergarten right through to now. I have had excellent
teachers; my first teacher in kindergarten engaged my interest in education; made learning
fun and was a great support for both myself and my family. My parents were also involved
in kindergarten in the form of council members.I enjoy my schooling and have been fortunate
to I have had good teachers who have recognized my potential and have supported me in what
I want to do and achieve.
>> I believe my reception teacher was the one who made me enjoy school. He taught us
that we can be anything we desired as long as we were prepared to put in the hard work.
He also made me enjoy school to the point that I was afraid that I would miss out on
something good if I was absent (laughter from audience), so I’ve tried to attend every
day, even if I was sick.
>> I think that early years of education are the most important because if you make school
interesting then children will want to attend. I also think that parent support is a major
factor. From a very young age my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles have told me
the importance of good education in order to achieve my career goals. Unfortunately
some kids don’t have that family support so they need teachers who will lead them there
and have high expectations of them and to support them to succeed in their learning.
>> I have taken their advice and have worked to achieve good grades but the hard work isn’t
over as next year I move into secondary school and I believe the toughest years are still
to come. It’s at the toughest times like these that you earn most about who you are;
your stengths, your weaknesses and most importantly how to deal with them. During these times
I always remind myself to keep going no matter how hard it gets because I’m quite a strong
person.
>> It’s always important to have confidence and high expectations and work hard to achieve
and teachers can play a big role in helping all student to learn this. Some things I consider
as my achievements are being elected by my peers as a prefect, a house captain for the
past two years and since I’ve started school I’ve been elected as part of the Student
Representative Council or SRC. But my major achievement, I believe, being awarded the
Native Aboriginal Student of the Year, awarded in 2010. This I consider as the most important
of my achievements as I was elected by the Port Augusta Aboriginal Community, and it
shows how hard I have worked. It also encourages other young Aboriginal people in my community.
I’m also actively involved in other activities such as the local Aboriginal Advisory Group
set up the Australian Red Cross. I’m a member of the Port Augusta Combined Schools Choir
and my schools powerful team as a team manager. I also play competition basketball and netball
and I am a member of the Port Augusta Schools Band.
>> In closing I believe that the success of my education is all due to the support and
encouragement of my family and all the staff at Willsden Primary School have given me.
I would sincerely like to thank them so to my school principal and my teachers who are
here today, a big thank you. Thank you and I hope you have a productive and enjoyable
conference.
