My name is Linse Sullivan. I'm here today at Alder Elementary. I'm here in
4th, 5th grade classroom, reading with some students. Students in Alder Elementary and
through this whole program say that they are college bound from day one in schools. They
do know I'm older and I'm here to help them read and 'hey I'm in college' and to meet
people out there who, for them it is possible. Alder is the first Dreamer School in the nation.
Being a Dreamer means that we try to help you the best we can to graduate so you can
go to college. Portland State adopted our fourth graders last year and they provided
t-shirts and we've got some Portland State volunteers that come in and do classroom work.
And I think the great thing about Portland State and our relationship for our students
is it's not that far away. Volunteers especially from the colleges I think are really important.
It, one, they're there to role model for our students what college students do. Students
aren't these things you see on TV. They're actually real. They're in your classroom.
It makes that connection tangible and real for our students, which I think really builds
that dream that I can go to college, I can do this. They're really excited to ask questions
and ask you where you're from and how many languages you speak. So far we've, I'm with
a fourth grade class and we've been playing with technology, so we have iPads and we've
been playing word games and doing vocabulary, learning opposite words. Actually one of the
students in the classroom I'm in asked me if I work at PSU during the summer time. And
I was like 'yeah.' And she was like 'I think I saw you on campus.' So that was kind of
neat for them to see somebody that they maybe might recognize.
