This short tutorial will help enable you to search for and find books in the University
of Washington Libraries.
We're starting from the University of Washington Libraries' homepage www.lib.washington.edu.
The UW WorldCat Search Box searches for books in thousands of libraries around the world,
but prioritizes UW Libraries locations in your results.
To narrow your search to books only, click on the book tabs.
The next step is to type in your research topics or keywords, author, or title and click
"search books." In this example we will search for the research topic of "multiracial identity."
In your list of results, UW Libraries' holdings will float to the top.
Click on the item you're interested and you will find details about the book, its location,
availability and its Library of Congress call number. In this case, we are interested in
the book Spurious Issues : race and multiracial identity politics in the United States.
After you have found a book in the UW WorldCat, be sure to write down the book's location
and Library of Congress Call number so you can find it in the Libraries. In the Odegaard
Library, all books are located on the third floor.
Our books are organized by the Library of Congress classification system, which groups
books by academic subject area. In this example, books in the Library of Congress Call number
E184.A1 are about race and multiracial identity in the United States.
The Library of Congress Call number is listed on the spine of the book, as shown here. Once
you find the book you need, you can check out the book at any Libraries service desks
for four weeks or longer.
