So it's a change of seasons and you want to understand more about a summer cleansing fast
and why it's done. My name is Mark Brinson, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Physical Medicine
and Human Performance Specialist. Maybe I can help you out with that a little bit. Traditionally
speaking the change of seasons is a really good time to do a cleanse, whether it's for
religious purposes or just for overall health of the body. Cleanses can help to cleanse
out especially the intestinal system. Help to detoxify the liver and detoxify the kidneys
and really prepare it for the challenges of your body going through a transition from
one season to the next. The things that your body has to do metabolically to keep up with
say wind and slight heat and cold in springtime are completely different than what it has
to deal with when you go into the heat of the summertime and how it has to metabolize
foods. So when you're going through this cleansing process, some of the things that can help
are either going through a full type of a fast where you're not eating any food at all
and you're just drinking water for anywhere from three to ten days. Or whether you're
doing some type of a juice fast specifically designed to clear out the intestines and to
help to detoxify liver or kidneys. Or even getting a series of colonics to start off
each season that's supposed to help get you kind of ready for it. It also smooths the
transition metabolically as I mentioned before to prevent you from catching any type of a
cold or a flu at that time. In addition to that you might want to add a little bit of
vitamin C, which can help with the process and keep your immune system kind of high.
Also, as the season starts to change, make sure that you don't overdo it. So, whether
you're talking about when we're going into summer the first hot days, you're not necessarily
going to be able to keep up with the same things that you were able to do if you're
dealing with a hot environment. So, if you're a runner, maybe that run isn't going to go
quite as well, or you don't need to do it for as long as a time. Also, as you're going
into the hot season, remember that naturally speaking, even when you're standing in a room
you are slightly perspiring whether you know it or not. When it becomes hot or humid you're
losing a little bit more of that hydration throughout the day than you normally would.
So whatever you're water intake is on a normal basis, you do want to up that just a little
bit. All these things are going to help you prepare for that coming season, they're going
to keep your immune system high and they're going to help your body make the transition
into what it needs to do metabolically in order to deal with that heat. My name is Mark
Brinson, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Physical Medicine and Human Performance Specialist
wishing you a happy, healthy and balanced day.
