Hi I'm Dr. Ginger Maurer (or Susan Chenet), Director of Camp Wa-Klo in the beautiful,
southwest region of New Hampshire.
Over the past 10 years we've been asked many questions about camp by potential campers
and parents.
Here's the answer to one of the questions we're asked most frequently.
What is a typical day at sleepaway camp?
At typical day at camp will vary from camp to camp.
Some camps have a predesigned program that different age groups follow, while others,
such as Wa-Klo, allow the campers to pick their own schedule.
Campers at Wa-Klo follow the same schedule for one week, and then are allowed to drop
and add classes to create a different schedule for the next week. Some camps have a daily
schedule change, while others offer no change to a child’s schedule.
The typical camp day will begin around 8:00am and bedtime varies depending on the age group.
A more structured camp may offer 5-6 activity periods a day while other camps may run variable
activity times in the morning and afternoon.
What I do know for sure, no camp day is ever exactly alike. Special programs, trips, surprises,
weather events, seem to make every day a special and unique day at camp. That’s one of the
elements of camp that makes it so exceptional—the spontaneity of each day to create that summer
magic that only a camp can do.
The creativity of the staff, the resources that camp has, and the equipment available
allows camps to create programs that cater to the personality of the campers and staff.
A camp’s typical day may change week to week, day to day, or minute by minute.
Some camps emphasize competition while others embrace individual achievements. Each camp
is totally different.
I suggest you go to the camp’s website to check out their daily schedule, mission and
philosophy, and decide what camp best suits your child’s needs.
Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, call the camp office and talk to the personnel,
ask for a reference or even a home visit.
And realize that the typical day at camp is anything but typical!
