[Minnesota rouser plays] Hello?
Miles! What's this I'm reading about a burglary near campus?
Was that near your apartment?
No, mom. I read that e-mail, too.
Don't worry about it.
Oh, I just worry about you so much down there in the big city!
Yeah, but there are plenty of ways
to stay safe at the U. All, right.
Are you ready for school?
Yep! Just stepping out the door.
Okay, good.
Love ya, Miles!
Concerned parents like my mother might not
like to hear about campus crime.
But resources like 624-WALK help me stay safe at the U.
And believe it or not, the U of M even has its own police force.
And these 21 emergency blue phones
on campus provide a direct connection to UMPD as soon
as you hit the button in 90 seconds or less.
That's right, Miles.
We're here for you and all the students on campus.
Do you mind if we go take a spin in your squad car?
I think that's a great idea, Miles.
Let's go. Chief, what's a day like for you on campus?
For the average university officer,
it really is an interesting place.
It changes kinda daily.
It is typical urban policing plus campus policing so a lot
of different problems we encounter,
you know the athletic events, kind of the welfare of students,
and then just regular 911 calls for service.
My daughter was in fact an undergraduate
and a med school student here so some
of my advice comes through that.
Obviously, using good judgment about your socializing.
Obviously, not over-consuming.
Of course, we don't recommend alcohol consumption
for people who are underage.
One thing my daughter taught me actually was she really did have
a program with her friends that somebody stays completely sober
and is sort of the chaperone of the group.
Kind of reminding, particularly for young women, reminding you
to not necessarily always go home with someone you just met.
If he was a nice guy tonight he should be a nice guy tomorrow.
And you know, kind of taking care
of one another in that respect.
You know, traveling on a weekend night
in groups is certainly advisable.
You know, stay into the well-lit areas, you know kind
of the real busy parts of campus
where like-minded people congregate is probably
the safest.
With Chief Hestness's advice in mind, I made sure to go
out with a group of friends that night.
And when we were ready to call it a night we called the
MSA Express.
They'll come pick you up between 10 p.m.
and 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
No questions asked.
Hello? Hi, mom.
No, I got home safely.
We took the MSA Express home.
Everything's okay.
Have a good night.
Bye. [Music plays]
